For busy moms, a wearable breast pump can be a total game-changer. It gives you the flexibility to pump while juggling your day-to-day tasks. But like anything new, there’s a learning curve. These tips will help you make the most of your wearable pump.
1. Ensure proper flange fit.
A well-fitting breast pump flange is key to comfort and efficient milk expression. It should fit snugly around your nipple – not too tight or loose. If the flange is the wrong size, it can cause pain or reduce milk flow. Wearable pumps usually come in different sizes or include different flange inserts, so check the sizing guide for your specific breast pump or consult a lactation consultant for help.
2. Relaxation is key.
A calm environment can help with milk letdown, even when you’re on the go. Try deep breathing or look at a picture of your baby to encourage relaxation. A brief breast massage before pumping can help stimulate milk flow too.
3. Alternate between wearable and traditional pumps.
While wearable pumps are convenient, some may not be as powerful as traditional pumps and can potentially provide less suction as their battery life dwindles. If you notice your breast milk supply decreasing, alternate between your wearable pump and a hospital-grade pump or a traditional breast pump. Many moms find this balance helps maintain their supply.
4. Keep your pump clean.
It’s important to clean your pump parts after each use to prevent bacteria buildup. Disassemble and wash the parts that come into contact with breast milk, and allow them to air-dry completely before reassembling. If you’re out, use pump wipes or a cleaning kit until you can wash them properly.
5. Watch the clock.
It’s easy to lose track of time when you’re hands-free pumping, but try not to pump for too long. Over-pumping can lead to discomfort or oversupply, which may cause clogged ducts. Aim for 15-20 minutes per session or 2-3 minutes after your milk has stopped flowing, and adjust based on your comfort level.
6. Position the pump correctly.
Wearable pumps must be centered on your nipples for optimal suction and comfort. You might experience leaks or reduced milk output if your flanges are off center. The right bra plays a big role in proper positioning.
Our exclusive Kindred Bravely for Lansinoh Wearable Pumping Bra + DiscreetDuo™ Wearable Pump Bundle features an innovative new bra specifically designed to work seamlessly with Lansinoh’s best-selling DiscreetDuo™ Wearable Pump. Carefully crafted to ensure that your hands-free, wearable pumping is effective and secure, this all-in-one bra has four-way stretch fabric that expands to accommodate wearables and then fully recovers, which provides optimal fit with and without a pump and supports both nursing and pumping.
7. Adjust the suction to your comfort.
Most wearable pumps have adjustable suction levels. Start with a low setting and gradually increase it to what feels comfortable. Too much suction can cause pain, while too little may not effectively express milk. Finding the right level is important for both comfort and efficiency.
“For the most effective pumping, try to mimic your baby’s feeding rhythm. Begin your pump session in ‘letdown mode,’ or quick bursts of low suction to encourage milk flow. After your milk lets down, alternate to longer, stronger suction, imitating your baby’s suck-swallow-breathe pattern,” says Kori Motes, Kindred Bravely’s in-house Certified Lactation Counselor.
8. Prepare for milk storage.
If you’re pumping on the go, make sure to have milk storage bags or bottles and a cooler if needed. Label your milk with the date and time before storing it in the fridge or freezer.
9. Charge your pump regularly.
Wearable pumps run on batteries, so be sure to keep them charged. Check the battery level before heading out, and charge your pump after every few uses. Some pumps come with portable charging cases, which are handy when you’re on the move.
10. Seek lactation support.
If you’re facing challenges like flange fit or milk supply issues, reach out to a lactation counselor or an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC). They can provide personalized advice and help troubleshoot any problems. You can also contact the pump manufacturer for specific guidelines.
A wearable breast pump can give you the freedom to pump on the move, but it’s important to have great tools and support in place. Remember that the right bra makes all the difference. A comfortable, supportive bra designed for nursing and pumping can improve your hands-free pumping experience.
