10 Tips for Summer Pregnancy Style: What to Wear to Stay Cool

Pregnancy during the spring and summer months can be rough, with high temperatures heightening the physical demands of carrying a baby (and let’s not forget pregnancy hot flashes). But with a few smart wardrobe choices, you can stay cool, comfortable, and on trend. Here’s a guide to what to wear when you’re pregnant in hot temps, featuring some of our favorite nursing & maternity clothes.

1. Breathable Fabrics

Pick clothes made from natural, lightweight fabrics like cotton and bamboo. These materials allow air to circulate, keeping you cool and reducing the likelihood of skin irritation. Bamboo, in particular, is a favorite for us because it’s super-soft and temperature-regulating. We love the Bamboo Lounge Around Nursing Tank and the Bamboo Maternity & Postpartum Lounge Short for lounging at home before and after baby.

2. Loose-Fitting Clothes

Tight clothing can be uncomfortable and restrict your movement, especially as your pregnancy progresses. Choose loose-fitting dresses, nursing tops, and maternity pants that offer plenty of room for your growing bump. The breathable Eleanora Bamboo Maternity & Nursing Dress is a great option—it’s breezy, comfortable, and cute, making it ideal for casual outings but easily dressed up for date night or even a baby shower.

3. Maternity Dresses

Maternity dresses are a summer staple. Look for empire-waist dresses or dresses with adjustable ties that can accommodate your changing shape. A-line and wrap dresses are flattering and provide easy access for nursing after you deliver your baby. Whether you’re looking for a maternity maxi dress for bump photos, a bump-friendly mini dress, or just the best nursing dress around, bookmark our seasonal dress (and maternity jumpsuit!) collection.

4. Everyday Wear

The Everyday Maternity & Nursing T-shirt is a must-have for every pregnant or nursing mom. It’s perfect for casual events and can easily be dressed up or down. Its soft, stretchy fabric and convenient nursing access make it an essential piece in your maternity wardrobe. Just add our Everyday Lounge Jogger for the perfect mom uniform.

5. Layering

Summer weather can be unpredictable. Lightweight cardigans, button-ups, and baggy sweatshirts (Princess Di style) are our faves for layering over nursing tank tops, plunge nursing bras that work as nursing crop tops, and dresses. They provide a bit of warmth in air-conditioned spaces and can be easily taken off when you’re outside.

6. Undergarments

Choose the best maternity underwear and bras–you deserve it. Maternity bras with wide straps and good support can make a big difference in your comfort level. Avoid underwire bras; wireless bras don’t restrict milk flow the way tight bras with underwires can.

Nursing bras that are both comfortable and functional are a great investment during your pregnancy; they provide the necessary support for breast size changes before and after pregnancy, and they offer easy access for nursing and pumping postpartum.

And don’t forget the best thigh saver ever, our Seamless Bamboo Maternity Thigh Saver, which has breathable bamboo fabric and provides extra coverage. Who knew long-leg underwear to prevent thigh chafing could be so comfy?

7. Footwear

Swollen feet are common during pregnancy, so comfy shoes are a must. Choose supportive sandals, slip-ons, or sneakers with good arch support. Avoid high heels and shoes that are too tight, opting instead for footwear that complements your maternity wardrobe.

At home (or on long airplane flights), we love wearing maternity compression socks. We especially adore the Premium Maternity Compression Socks because, in addition to providing great support, they’re moisture-wicking and odor-reducing.

8. Swimwear

If you plan on spending time at the pool or beach, invest in a good maternity swimsuit. Nursing tankinis and one-piece maternity bathing suits with ruching at the sides can accommodate your growing belly. Look for styles with adjustable straps and ample support for your growing boobs. Our maternity swimsuits and nursing bathing suits, like the Ruffle Wrap Maternity & Nursing One Piece Swimsuit, also have UPF 50 sun protection.

9. Sun Protection

Pregnant skin can be more sensitive to the sun. Wear a wide-brimmed hat to protect your face and neck, and opt for sunglasses to shield your eyes. Lightweight maternity shirts and maxi dresses can provide additional sun protection without causing you to overheat. And don’t forget those layers for temperature control and skin protection!

10. Maternity & Nursing Pajamas

Getting good sleep while pregnant can be challenging–especially when it’s hot out. For bedtime, we love the Clea Bamboo Short Sleeve Pajama Set. The maternity pajamas you need for hot nights and hot flashes, the Clea PJs keep you cool and comfortable throughout the night. This ultra-soft maternity pajama set can be worn from pregnancy through postpartum, and the nursing-friendly top offers button-down breastfeeding access when your little one arrives.

By embracing a versatile, stylish wardrobe and prioritizing comfort and breathability, you can navigate your summer pregnancy with style and ease. Remember to stay hydrated, take breaks in cool places, and most importantly, listen to your body.
